Apple trees, vibrant skies,
Spending the day with you
Reminds me of a time
I’ve never actually lived,
And it scares me.
I watch as you test the next branch,
My feet planted safely on the earth,
As my mind spins
Conjuring up images of happy possibilities
Only for them to be blown away by the wind.
I can feel it now;
Torn cotton revealing bloody knees
The high just before you crash,
Facedown onto the pavement
For everyone to see.
For me to look back on
And cringe.
But what if that never happens?
What if this becomes normality?
Of seeing you laugh, seeing you smile
As you try to reach the top branch
And grab the apple hanging in the air.
Making this day, the beginning of it all.
